Career Orientation Test: Interests, Work Values and Strengths – questionnaire preview

Commercial career tests for school leavers and prospective students usually combine three parts: vocational interests, work values or key qualifications, and performance tasks. The first two parts can be covered with public-domain instruments. This template uses the 60 activity items of the O*NET Interest Profiler from the U.S. Department of Labor in German translation, plus 18 statements on the six work values of the O*NET Work Importance Profiler and twelve statements on key qualifications. The result is a Holland code from the three strongest interests, a values profile and an overview of strengths, as a result page and as a PDF. The template deliberately leaves out performance tasks: validated tasks licensed for commercial use are rare, and a self-check should not pretend to be an ability test. For schools, universities, counselling services and apprenticeship marketing it is an entry point that prepares the counselling conversation.

When should you use this template?

This template is a great fit for:

  • Career orientation at schools and universities, with the PDF as the basis for a conversation
  • Counselling services that need a profile before the appointment
  • Apprenticeship marketing and career days as a self-check with an instant result
  • Studies of interest profiles across whole cohorts

Frequently asked questions

Where do the questions come from?
The 60 activities are the items of the O*NET Interest Profiler Short Form, a public-domain instrument from the U.S. Department of Labor, translated into German here. The work values follow the six value dimensions of the O*NET Work Importance Profiler; the key qualifications were written for this template.
Why are there no performance tasks?
Because open task collections for commercial use are rare. Anyone who wants to measure abilities adds their own licensed procedure.
Can I leave parts out?
Yes. Each part is its own question block with its own dimensions. Delete the block and its dimensions; the rest keeps calculating.
Is the German version validated?
No. The translation is careful but not separately tested. For research purposes use a validated German interest inventory.
