Choice questions: single, multiple, dropdown, picture

The foundation of any survey: single choice for one answer, multiple choice for several, dropdown for long lists and picture choice when logos or packshots are on offer.

Each type carries the right analysis logic with it: single choice becomes a categorical variable, multiple choice becomes 0/1 columns per option — with nothing for you to recode later.

  • Single choice — one answer, one categorical variable
  • Multiple choice — several answers, 0/1 columns per option
  • Dropdown for long answer lists
  • Picture choice for logos, packshots and visual concepts

Likert matrix, NPS, slider and constant sum

For measuring attitudes and preferences: the Likert matrix (single- and multi-select) for whole scale batteries, NPS for the recommendation question, the slider for fine gradations and constant sum for budget and importance splits.

Rating scale, ranking and the emoji scale are there too — each with the correct scale values so means, top-box and crosstabs are right immediately.

  • Likert matrix (single- and multi-select) for scale batteries
  • NPS question with its own analysis logic
  • Slider and rating scale for fine gradations
  • Constant sum and ranking
  • Emoji scale for low-barrier surveys

Open text, number, date, contact and consent

Not everything is choice: open text for reasons and verbatims, number and date for precise input, contact fields for capturing addresses and emails, and a consent field for GDPR-compliant opt-in.

That covers the whole questionnaire — from the first screening question to the closing consent — in one tool.

Common questions about question types

Which question types does DataLion survey software support?
20+ question types: single choice, multiple choice, dropdown, picture choice, rating scale, NPS, slider, constant sum, ranking, Likert matrix (single- and multi-select), emoji scale, date, number, open text, contact fields and consent — each with the right validation.
Does DataLion support Likert matrices and scale batteries?
Yes. The Likert matrix comes as single- and multi-select and suits whole scale batteries. On publish, every matrix row becomes its own column with the correct scale values.
Can I ask NPS, slider and constant-sum questions?
Yes. NPS, slider, rating scale and constant sum are dedicated question types with the right validation. NPS already brings its own analysis logic with it.
How are multiple-choice questions analyzed?
Multiple-choice questions are automatically split into 0/1 columns per option on publish — there is nothing to split or recode manually, and you can cross-tabulate straight away.
Are there question types for open answers and contact data?
Yes. Alongside open text for verbatims, there are number and date fields, contact fields for capturing addresses and emails, and a consent field for GDPR-compliant opt-in.
