Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) – questionnaire preview

The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory was developed by Kristensen and colleagues at the Danish National Institute of Occupational Health as a freely available alternative to the licensed Maslach Burnout Inventory. It separates personal exhaustion from exhaustion that respondents explicitly attribute to their work – a distinction that is practical in workplace health management because it shows whether the strain comes from the job or from life as a whole. Each scale yields a value from 0 to 100; from 50 points the instrument speaks of burnout symptoms.

Frequently asked questions

How is the CBI scored?
Each response step maps to a fixed value: always 100, often 75, sometimes 50, seldom 25, never 0. The scale value is the mean of the items and therefore lies between 0 and 100. Values from 50 upwards count as elevated.
Why not the Maslach Burnout Inventory?
The MBI is licensed and charged per administration. The CBI was published explicitly for free use and is well researched – for anonymous self-checks at scale it is the more practical choice.
