Music Preference Profile (STOMP) – questionnaire preview

In 2003 Peter Rentfrow and Samuel Gosling showed that music preferences across a wide range of genres reduce to four underlying dimensions: reflective and complex, intense and rebellious, upbeat and conventional, and energetic and rhythmic. Their Short Test of Music Preferences simply asks how much you enjoy 14 genres. For media and market research the instrument is attractive because it takes under three minutes, reads as an entertaining type test, and still yields a robust, widely replicated structure.

Frequently asked questions

Why only 14 genres?
The 14 genres cover the four factors that proved stable in the analyses. More genres add length but little information.
Does the test say something about my personality?
There are documented but weak links with personality traits. They are not strong enough for statements about individuals – but they are useful for describing audiences.
