What Kind of Player Are You? – questionnaire preview

In 1996 Richard Bartle described four reasons people play in online worlds: to achieve, to explore, to be with others, or to compete. The model remains the best-known framework in player research – and is explicitly a way of thinking, not a test. This template translates the four motivations into sixteen purpose-written statements and delivers a motivation profile rather than a pigeonhole. For studios, publishers and media brands it is a self-check with high participation whose data doubles as an audience segmentation.

When should you use this template?

This template is a great fit for:

  • As a community activation for studios, publishers and gaming media
  • To segment player groups in market research studies
  • As an entry point to larger surveys on playing habits

Frequently asked questions

Is this a scientific test?
No. The Bartle model is an established framework in player research but not a validated psychological instrument. This template is therefore labelled as an entertainment typology.
Can I be several types?
Yes, and that is the norm. The strongest motivation is reported, but the radar shows all four – that is where the real information sits.
